Area 2A: Robin Fleming
I'm Robin Fleming, and I currently work as an elementary school nurse in Seattle Public Schools. During the course of my 11 years with SPS, I have worked with students in K-12, with emphasis on serving immigrant populations. I have a master's degree in community health nursing, and received my doctorate in educational policy and leadership from the University of Washington in 2008. My professional interests and experiences are in working with immigrant populations, reducing health and educational disparities, conducting research and program evaluations, and advocating for nurses and school health programs. I serve on the planning committee of the Martinez Foundation, which strives to reduce educational disparities by diversifying the teacher workforce. I have published research and essays in the Journal of School Nursing, Teacher Education and Practice, and The Journal of School Health, and have presented my researach at national conferences held by educational and nursing institutions. I believe in an interdisciplinary perspective that allows us to better communicate with our educational colleagues as well as with political constituents. Effectively communicating with these colleagues is central to advancing knowledge of what school nurses do, thereby increasing our value and helping us to better realize the goals of school health. Serving as a SNOW representative is an honor and privilege, through which I will aim to strengthen and promote our practice.
